Fruit! In Your Garden...
You don’t need a separate fruit garden to be able to enjoy the pleasure of picking your own home-grown fruit. The new dwarf varieties of Apple will grow happily in the lawn or shrub border, and soft fruit will be quite at home in a vegetable plot.
Growing fruit in the garden is both decorative and rewarding and has been an ongoing love affair for gardeners since gardens first took shape in the 16th century. The introduction of dwarfing rootstocks has meant that Apple, Pear, Plum and Cherry can be grown as trees in small gardens. This has led to an upsurge in interest in fruit growing over the past few years and consequently there are many new types of fruit, such as Kiwi Fruit, that can be grown, and also new forms such as ‘Coronet’ Apple trees.
