Therefore you will find Berberidopsis, Pandorea, Trachelospermum and Actinidia varieties together with the better-known ivies and honeysuckles. You will also find unusual varieties of Clematis such as C. japonica ‘Orange Peel’, C. cirrhosa balearica, the passion-flower like C. florida ‘Seiboldii’, and the wonderful evergreen C. ‘Early sensation’, which is a huge hit with our customers, especially in spring.

The large-flowered clematis share with the rose a special place in the garden. People sometimes find them a little tricky to establish but because they are so charming, they deserve the extra care needed in soil preparation. They are best planted with their ‘head’ in the sun and their ‘feet’ in the shade. They will succeed in a good fertile soil, to which some organic material such as farmyard manure has been added. Mulch annually with manure or compost, and although good drainage is essential, a good supply of water is also needed. Favourite varieties at Hennessy’s include the deep lavender-blue ‘Lasurstern’, the beautiful soft rose-pink ‘Comtesse de Bouchaud’, ‘Dr Rupple’, which is deep-pink with a carmine bar, ‘Rouge Cardinal’ a lovely crimson velvet variety and the best red ‘Noibe’.
