Bedding Plants! In Your Garden...
The boom in container and hanging basket growing has led to dramatic changes in the bedding plant scene since we first opened in 1991.

Exceptional new varieties such as ‘Surfinia’ Petunias, Bacopa ‘Snowflake’, ‘Tapien’ Verbenas, Diasicas, and Bidens have all been huge successes, and satisfied customers keep coming back for more. They’ve also passed on the word to their friends, so that in a few short years a lot of ‘new’ plants have been installed as ‘old’ favourites.

Most of our bedding plants are produced on our state of the art Nursery. At the centre of this development is our new greenhouse, almost 2 Acres, (about 4,000 times the volume of a typical 8' x 6' greenhouse!), fitted with roller benches to allow for quick loading of plants and prompt delivery to the Garden Centre.

We ensure that they are grown to the highest standards - the freshest, best quality plants anyone could ask for...

Hanging Baskets:

About 30% of gardens have at least one hanging basket, and that number is growing year by year. Most baskets are bought ready planted for about £16 for a 14" basket, but it is simple and popular to plant your own.

Secrets of Success:

    • Sun or Shade for most plants the ideal is at least a partly sunny site, and avoid strong winds.
    • Watering – choose a compost to which water retaining granules have been added. A basket in full flower will typically require at least once a day in dry weather.
    • Feeding - fertilise your baskets regularly. It is recommended to feed them about once a week, to produce baskets full of colour.
    • Colour in general it’s best not to use more than three distinct colours. A very successful basket can be made by using variations of a single colour theme. While it is not as common, a basket planted with a single variety can be very effective.
    • Foliage the importance of foliage plants to a basket is often overlooked. They contribute to overall structure and balance, provide colour when there is a lull in flowering, and can be used to complement flower colour.
    • Dead-heading – Removal of dead flowers or leaves once a week will prolong the flowering period.

Informal Bedding:

The popular post-war practise of creating formal beds of neat rows of bedding plants has been somewhat taken over by the surge in popularity of the mixed border. People who once believed that bedding plants were not for them are now devotees of informal bedding style and are first in line for new Penstemons, Osteospermums and Marguerites. The attraction of using these plants as space fillers to fill in gaps between shrubs and perennials, introducing much needed colour through summer, has been too much to refuse. A new garden can be filled with colour and an old one brought to life, in a short length of time, for little expense.
